Thailand Street Food – PHUKET in 2022! Amazing Massaman Curry + JUMBO PRAWNS & Thai Seafood!

This is the start of THAILAND 2022 Street Food series! Kicking things off in beautiful Phuket, Thailand. This is the largest island in the country surrounded by the crystal clear Andaman sea. A tourist hotspot but home to traditional, unique and delicious Thai Food. Especially in Phuket Town you can taste Phuketian street foods with rich history and influence!

In this episode I started the day at Roti Chaofa a Phuket institution and house of delicious curry and roti! I tried their famous massaman with chicken and also their classic curried drumstick. You can also satisfy your sweet tooth with their milk covered banana roti.

After breakfast I hit Thanon Thalang, a historic street lined with Sino-Chinese pastel-coloured row houses. This is the spot to get your postcard pictures of Phuket Town! Right around the corner from touristy Thanon Thalang you can find A Pong Mae Sunee. Here you can taste the Phuketian desert known as A Pong, a thin coconut batter pastry. These things are seriously addictive. Crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Make sure to try some while they’re hot but buy as many as you’d like to take home at only 3 baht a piece.

You’re going to want to cool off after walking around under Phuket’s hot sun. I choose to stop at Kopitiam by Walai. This place has all the charm and old-world feel you’d expect in this historic city. I tried the blue pea flower and lime soda, a super refreshing and picturesque drink. Kopitiam also sells another Phuketian desert known as O Ei. This is a jelly made of a special type of fig served on shaved ice with fruit. Super refreshing and sweet.

Moving right along I hit up Kota Khao Mun Kai for some Hainanese chicken rice! When the owner makes you her favourite sauce combination you happily oblige and apply generously to meat and rice. She also had me try her famous crispy pork and thin cut red pork! This is a great lunch stop in Phuket Town.

A jump on my motorbike and rode down palm lined streets to Rawai in the southern part of Phuket island. The water here is turquoise blue with green hues. Perfect for swimming and jumping off the Rawai pier.

Logically my next step was to taste some fresh Andaman seafood and luckily for me the Rawai fish market offers every type of mollusc, crustacean and fish you can name. I tried the JUMBO prawns with a side of squid. Mook Manee a Michelin recommended restaurant cooks your seafood to your liking. Mine was simple; BBQ prawns and spicy squid salad. So good, so fresh!

To end my day I watched the sun drop behind Promthep cape in southern Phuket to wrap up my first amazing day of eating here in Thailand!
