In the 4th of the 5 parts Amritsar food series, we have are embarking on another fascinating food journey across this food haven.

We started the tour with some rich and creamy and savory paneer bhurji and bread combo from Munshi Di Hatti, a non fancy eatery located in a narrow lane of the old part of Amritsar. It was cooked with generous amounts of butter and a secret masala. We washed it down with a frothy milk coffee that Goyal ji the owner prepared using a specially designed appliance

After this we reached Ashok Kumar DAV College wale to have nutri kulcha and nutri rice. This irresistible combo has a different fan base in the city due to its rich and interesting taste. Nutri is a spices laden, semi dry robust curry made of soya nuggets. They are fried over a griddle with onions, capsicum, butter and then served with kulcha. For the nutri rice, plain rice is tossed in that curry. We liked the layers of flavours in the two combos.

The next destination was Panditji Chole Wale. Run by two brothers, here you get just two dishes – kulcha chole and matthi chole. We opted for the bheeja kulcha and matthi chole. The former is kulcha bread dipped in chole while the later one is crisp matthi topped with chole. Both the dishes are garnished with chutney and sliced onions and served hot. We got to know from the owner that the chole is completely oil free and cooked only with spices. This place is very famous with the locals who find is a light and filling snack.

After this headed to Gol Bagh Akhara to witness Punjab’s famous wrestling culture. Here we met coach Sikandar Ji who showed us around the place. They have provisions for both mat and traditional wrestling trainings. Anubhav joined a mat wrestling group for their warm up session which seemed quite rigorous. It was much required digest all the ghee and butter rich food that we have been gorging on for the past few days.

Located in the heart of Amritsar, close to the Golden Temple, Rang Punjab showcases the rich, wonderful culture of Pind through its food. Here we joined founder Kiran Dhillon and tried the season special gajrela, kanji, aalu wadiyan, khameeri roti and gur ke chawal from their eclectic and extensive menu. Every morsel evoked the authentic homely flavours of Punjab.

The last stop of this tour was Kesar Da Dhaba which is a shining landmark in Amritsar’s culinary map. They have been serving mouth watering Punjabi cuisines since 1916. Their reputation is so huge that at any point of time it is filled with visitors and locals alike. Here we tried a set platter consisting of lacha paratha, mah ki dal, palak paneer, baigan ka bharata, chana, boondi ka raita, firni and rasmalai. For us the highlight of this spread was the baigan ka bharta which was spicy, smokey and rich. The ghee loaded dal was creamy and tasty played a second fiddle to the bharta.
